An Open Letter to My Wife About Leadership
You know that guy at work that says he is a “strategic thinker” and eludes all the real work? It’s not the guy’s laziness you resent so much as it is the way he makes your contribution feel small and unimportant. Well, that’s me at home. And it isn’t that I take the dirty work for granted. It’s that I’m not competent. I kinda know what the kids should do, how the kids should act, what the kids should eat. But convincing them to actually do those things, well that’s someone else’s job. Please understand that I’m more of a tone setter. And that tone is laissez-faire. You don’t want me involved in the details because I’ll just screw them up. And then where are we? Let’s take the nap I’m thinking about – I only want that nap because I like to lead by example. Just imagine if all of the kids see how great that nap looks and then follow me. Remember when they all followed whoever drew gonads on your birthday card yesterday? Kids respond to leadership. So I’d really like to help more but it’s better for us if you just let me be the leader I was born to be. Everyone wins.
Peace and love.
